中文電碼,又稱中文商用電碼、中文電報碼或中文電報明碼,原本是於電報之中傳遞中文信息的方法。它是第一個把漢字化作電子訊號的編碼表。
自摩斯電碼在1835年發明後,一直只能用來傳送英語或以拉丁字母拼寫的文字。1880年清政府僱用丹麥人設計中文電報之編碼表,根本決定權握於非中文母語者手上,後來通行之四位數字編碼由法國駐華人員威基傑(Auguste Viguier)於1872年時首先編出,並於1880年由清朝政府僱用其為電報員;另一說稱由丹麥人提出。德國人郎樂禮(或譯稱郎克禮,Ernst Faber)在1880年出版《電報新書》(Telegraphic Code of Chinese Characters),先於威基傑的編碼系統問世。1881年起中國電報總局颁定《電報新編》,收录約6800個常用漢字,從0001到9999,用四位阿拉伯数字表示,例如:"在" 字是第二千三百十一個字,電報交換時即成為 "2311" 兩組二字双音數字,開始啟用;這項標準一直實行至今日。1931年增補收字超過9千字。1933年又發表增補版。
The first telegraph code for Chinese was brought into use soon after the Great Northern Telegraph Company (大北電報公司 / 大北電報公) (Dabel Dianbao Gongsi) introduced telegraphy to China in 1871. Siméon Auguste Viguier, a Frenchman and customs officer in Shanghai, published a codebook (Viguier 1872), succeeding Danish astronomer Hans Carl Frederik Christian Schjellerup's earlier work.
In consideration of the former code's insufficiency and disorder of characters, Zheng Guanying (鄭觀應 / 郑观应 ZhèNG Guānyǐng) compiled a new codebook in 1881. It remained in effect until the Ministry of Transportation and Communications printed a new book in 1929. In 1933, a supplement was added to the book.
After the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the codebook forked into two different versions, due to revisions made in the Mainland China and Taiwan independently from each other. The Mainland version, the Standard Telegraph Codebook, adopted the simplified Chinese characters in 1981.
